Specific conditions and contexts
- Eating disorders. If you have a history of disordered eating, calorie tracking can entrench unhealthy patterns. See our eating disorder resources page. Consider working with a registered dietitian or therapist before starting any calorie tracking program.
- Diabetes and blood-sugar management. Carb tracking informs but does not replace clinical management. Work with your endocrinologist or diabetes educator on insulin dosing, medication, and meal planning.
- Pregnancy and lactation. Caloric needs differ during pregnancy and lactation. Consult your obstetric provider or RD before setting calorie targets.
- Kidney, liver, or cardiovascular disease. These conditions often require specific macronutrient restrictions that are RD- or physician-prescribed. Do not self-prescribe based on tracker app outputs.
- Children and adolescents. Calorie tracking is not generally recommended for under-18s due to risk of disordered eating. Consult a pediatrician before any tracking program.
- Athletes with disordered eating risk. Sport contexts with weight-class or aesthetic pressures (combat sports, gymnastics, distance running, bodybuilding) carry elevated disordered-eating risk. Work with a sports RD.
Accuracy limits of calorie tracker outputs
As documented in our accuracy guide, calorie tracker outputs typically carry a ±15-25% error band per meal. This is adequate for general weight-management decision-making but is below the threshold for clinical dietary assessment. For clinical nutritional assessment, weighed reference meals and 24-hour recalls administered by a registered dietitian remain the standard.
